Whatever It Takes

Last night at my Bible study and today in my read through the Bible in a year reading, I read Mark 2:1-12

1 After a few days, Jesus returned to Capernaum, and word got around that he was back home.2 A crowd gathered, jamming the entrance so no one could get in or out. He was teaching the Word.3 They brought a paraplegic to him, carried by four men.4 When they weren’t able to get in because of the crowd, they removed part of the roof and lowered the paraplegic on his stretcher.5 Impressed by their bold belief, Jesus said to the paraplegic, “Son, I forgive your sins.”6 Some religion scholars sitting there started whispering among themselves,7 “He can’t talk that way! That’s blasphemy! God and only God can forgive sins.”8 Jesus knew right away what they were thinking, and said, “Why are you so skeptical?9 Which is simpler: to say to the paraplegic, ‘I forgive your sins,’ or say, ‘Get up, take your stretcher, and start walking’?10 Well, just so it’s clear that I’m the Son of Man and authorized to do either, or both . . .” (he looked now at the paraplegic),11 “Get up. Pick up your stretcher and go home.”
12 And the man did it—got up, grabbed his stretcher, and walked out, with everyone there watching him. They rubbed their eyes, incredulous—and then praised God, saying, “We’ve never seen anything like this!”

In this story, the paralytic man’s friends weren’t at all discouraged by the fact that they couldn’t get in the door to see Jesus, they never once gave up, they had full faith that Jesus would heal their friend and they weren’t going to stop until they got him in there. Their determination was so strong that they literally dug a hole in the roof of this house and lowered their friend in. Think about how hard that would be? Not only the physical problems that would occur holding a dead weight down from a roof but getting their friend up to the roof and cutting through clay to him their. They didn’t have modern tools, they couldn’t just take a chainsaw to dig through the roof, I don’t know exactly what tools they did have for this but I know that whatever they did, it would have been very difficult. My question is, why aren’t more of us willing to do this? Not literally dig through a roof to get our friends to Jesus but work just that hard. I know way to many Christians, myself included that while we want our friends to come to Jesus, we don’t want to go out of our way and make ourselves uncomfortable to do so. We need to be uncomfortable sometimes. We’re talking about the eternal lives of our friends here, we say we care about them but if we don’t care enough about their salvation to bring them to Christ, then really, we don’t care at all. We need to do WHATEVER it takes. No matter how uncomfortable it makes us.
